New six-week program for wee ones at Shade's Mills

Web posted on September 28, 2017

Shade's Mills Nature Centre in Cambridge is setting out in a new direction and offering a six-week outdoor exploration program for parents and preschool children on Wednesday mornings, called Wild Wee Ones, starting October 4.

The Wild Wee Ones program brings nature-based education that has long been provided to school children by the Grand River Conservation Authority to younger kids. The classroom is the earth, the trees, the creek and fields. The group will meet outside and stay outside, so it is important to dress for the weather.

Each morning is greeted with a welcome of each other and gratitude for the day. Through playing games and discovering together, the young explorers will be challenged to go beyond the familiar. They will learn to focus their attention, to ask why, to work together and to develop inquisitive confidence.

"We provide a nurturing learning environment for you and your young explorers. Our program leaders will guide the children in both nature-based play and discovery. During the powerful stages of early childhood, the sense of exploration is uninhibited, and playing is the core method for learning," said Tracey Ryan, Manager of Environmental Education and Restoration at the GRCA.

In addition, mornings will be filled with art, song, dance, reading, storytelling and much more. The important things the explorers will learn will show up naturally.

This program is ideal for parents or guardians who are looking for ways to connect their children with nature and the outdoors at an early age. The registration fee for non-members is $70, or $50 for Grand River Parks members. This covers an adult with one or two young children, ages two-and-a-half to five.
