(CAMPBELLVILLE) Harness racing has resumed at Mohawk Park, Without punters filling the stands.

Betting is carried out online. Live streaming of the racing is also available.

Drivers, owners and grooms are reported to be delighted. Some of the employees working to care for the horses live from pay-cheque-topay-cheque which would have caused serious financial difficulties.

Area  drivers wholive in the Guelph-Rockwood area are said to be delighted by the turn of events since most harness tracks in North America have closed because of the covid-19 crisis.

Doug McNair, a Guelph resident and one of the top-ranked North American harness drivers admitted to CBC News looking into the bare grandstands is surreal. It drives home the point, he added, these are indeed unique times.


Bob McClure, Rockwood resident, who won the $1 million Hambilton race last year, in with a 15/1 pick Forbidden Trade, has similar oncerns. Many of the workers at the tracks and live on low wages.

Racing at Woodbine Mohawk Park is scheduled to resume Thursday.
