Lock It Or Lose It!

Web posted on December 02, 2019

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding everyone to Lock It or Lose It! Take proactive steps to protect your vehicle and your property.

The Perth County OPP has responded to several reports of stolen vehicles and vehicle entries from January 2019 until present. Many of these thefts could have been prevented by locking the doors and pocketing the keys. In some cases, residents have reported that their garages were entered as a result of the suspect(s) having access to garage door openers after entering an unlocked vehicle.

On November 20, 2019, Perth County OPP responded to a theft from a motor vehicle in Mitchell. Further investigation revealed that a debit card was used at a local business. A person was identified and located.

Scott McLELLAN 56-years-old of Grand Bend was arrested and charged with;

  • Theft under $5,000

  • Fraud under $5,000

  • Possession of property obtained by crime

The accused is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice, Stratford on December 30, 2019 to answer the charges.

 The OPP is offering these helpful reminders to avoid becoming a victim:

  • If you are not at home, lock your doors.

  • Always roll up your vehicle's windows, lock the doors and pocket the key.

  • If you have a garage, use it and lock the door as well as your vehicle.

  • Always park your vehicle in a well-lit area.

  • Never leave valuable objects or packages in full view. Put them in the trunk.

  • Never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.

  • If your vehicle is equipped with a security system, remember to activate it.
